One of DEVAYANI's students has received a Gold and a Silver medal at an
International Dance Competition overseas. The student's achievements are :

Conferred the 'National Nritya Shiromani Award' at the 5th Cuttack Mahotsav and
International Music & Dance Festival January 2014. Represented India at the '2nd
World Events Competition and Folk Festival', December 2012, Budapest, Hungary, as
a soloist of Indian Classical Dance .Represented India and bagged a Gold medal at
'The Dance World Cup', 2011, Ontario, Canada, for performing Indian classical
dance as a soloist and a Bronze medal at 'The Dance World Cup', 2011, Ontario,
Canada, for performing contemporary performance (solo). Won "Women in Culture,
Tradition and Art Promotion Award" 2009, conferred by 'Women International
Network',New Delhi".


The Academy is the inspiration of the internationally renowned Bharata Natyam artist Devayani, a Padma Sri Awardee from the Government of India. It aims at promoting and perpetuating the ancient dance form Bharata Natyam in its pristine form and glory. The Academy works towards achieving excellence in the field of Art with the belief that Art knows no frontiers and therefore is universal.

It endeavours to bring people together from all over the world through the medium of Art and promotes Indian Dance and Culture internationally. It imparts the mandatory artistic education required for Indian Classical Dance, Music and Culture.

Devayani, Founder and Artistic Director of the Academy has many years of experience and has trained students from all over the world: India, Singapore, U.S., U.K., France and other European Countries, Brazil, Canada different parts of Asia etc.

About the Founder and Artistic Director of DEVAYANI DANCE ACADEMY

Devayani is a foremost eminent exponent of the Classical Indian Dance style Bharata Natyam in the world. This celebrated French artist has performed all over India in the renowned Cultural Centres, Music and Dance Festivals and in its neighboring countries like Nepal, Kashmir, Bangladesh. Devayani has placed Bharata Natyam on the map of the world in the most prestigious Festivals and Concert Halls including in UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Greece, all the Scandinavian countries, Estonia, Korea, Portugal etc. Devayani’s performances are described as “mesmerizing” and leaving the spectators “spell bound”.Devayani is an empanelled artist with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Govt. of India. A firm believer that Art knows no frontiers. Devayani is a pioneer and trendsetter in many ways:     

*On the 60th India’s Republic Day of January 26. 2009 Devayani was conferred by the President of India the PADMA SHRI Award which is one of the highest civilian awards given to the most distinguished persons in recognition of  their outstanding services & achievements. DEVAYANI is the first French Classical Dancer and Foreign artist to have made it to this elite list in India in Bharata Natyam. Other prestigious awards conferred on Devayani include:

The 2004 IMM Award for Excellence as a Top Cultural Ambassador.

The National Women Excellence Award 2008 for Women in Culture, Tradition and Art Promotion.

The Yog Confederation of India Award 2009 for her contribution in the field of Culture.

* Devayani was given a full page coverage in the TIME & NEWSWEEK magazines for the ‘Real People’ campaign of the Government of India. She is the only Indian Artist who has made it to the top international magazines. A 20 feet hoarding with her Bharata Natyam pose against the backdrop of Mahabalipuram was displayed in TIMES SQUARE in 2009-2010 for the ‘Incredible India’ campaign of the Government of India.

*Devayani is the only Indian Artist and First Foreign Artist who was invited to represent Traditional Indian Dance at the World Culture Open in Seoul, Korea.

*Devayani is the First Artist of Indian Classical Dance to be given the top billing for her Bharata Natyam performances with the legendary opera singer Luciano PAVAROTTI at the XXIV Algarve International Music Festival in Portugal for the New Millennium Celebrations.

*Devayani is the First Artist of Indian Dance to promote Bharata Natyam through her dance productions & workshops at the Edinburgh International Festival Fringe for several consecutive years.

*Devayani was selected by the Arts Council of England as the First Asian Dancer Artist - in - Residence to promote Indian Dance & Culture in the UK.

*Devayani was the First foreign Artist to be the heroine of an Indian Film “America Ammayi” (Telugu).Till date, fans remember her acting as the heroine of the film & her dance sequences shot in the Temple of Chidambaram.

“General Course” & “Certificate Course” for Bharata Natyam

The minimum age for the general course is 6 and the minimum duration of the course is of 2 to 3 years with a yearly assessment. The course is an ongoing process ,the duration of which can be extended.

Certificate Course for the International Certification of Dance Studies given by the CID (International Dance Council, Headquarters, UNESCO, Paris). It has 5 levels. At the end of each level, a Certificate will be given after 150 hours of dance classes in a year have been completed  @ of 3 dance classes per week. For those who want an intensive course, the 150 hours can be completed in 6 months. For each Certificate Course the student will have to appear for an Audition at any point of time in the year and will have the freedom to re-appear.

Each level of the Certificate Course follows a specific syllabus and contains yearly examinations for practical and theory both. The student has to register for the examination. It is the tradition of the establishment to have a panel of experts from different fields to evaluate.

Selected students are given a chance to perform.

The duration of the General Course and of the Certificate Course for Bharata Natyam is of 2 to 5 years. It includes:

Practical training i.e.: footwork, adavus (units of movements) mudras or hand gestures, abhinaya, karanas (sculptural poses). Theoretical knowledge of: Thala system (measure of time) Treatise of Dance Hindu Mythology and Philosophy Beginners dance compositions A wider repertoire for more advanced students.

Admissions: Open throughout the year

Teaching in: Individual Classes, Classes of two or three and group classes.


Preparation for Bharata Natyam for Arangetram, Dance Contests, shows. Polishing of the style in which a student might have been trained earlier. Creative work with semi-professional and professional dancers even from other dance styles. Bollywood Dance Hatha Yoga Personal Effectiveness Training Classes emphasizing on stretch, Body toning, Thera Band and Aerobics for building up of stamina.

Devayani, a French born artist, performs Bharata Natyam before distinguished audiences in India and across the Globe to the critics' acclaim. Devayani over the years has built up a well deserved reputation and a large following in the west as the great exponent of Indian Classical Dance. She brings to the stage years of training experience and some of her own interpretations of classical dances.Devayani lays the foundations of her choreographic input of the show on richly woven rhythmic patterns and a high spiritual content which transcends the stories of Hindu mythology. Her attractive personality, the grace and pace of her dancing style holds the audience spellbound. Trained under the 'Great Masters in the Bharata Natyam dance tradition' Shri K. G. Ellapa Mudaliar and Kalaimamani V. S. Muthuswami Pillai of the temple towns of South India, Devayani took Indian audiences by storm with her acting and dance performances in the lead role of the Telugu film 'America Ammayi ' even before making her debut on the stage in Madras.

From Madras, Devayani came to Delhi and formed her own troupe under guru  Shri V. Sadasivam's scintillating musical direction, performed in the most sought after venues of all the Indian metropolitan cities and with tireless elan performed across the whole of Madhya Pradesh 'Narmada Ke Kinare.  Devayani won the hearts of critics and of music & dance lovers and was selected by the Arts Council of Great Britain as the 'First Asian dancer Artiste in Residence ' to promote Indian Dance and Culture in UK. With her systematic and strategic approach of international platforms including Purcell Room, TheQueen Elizabeth Hall, The Commonwealth Institute, The Nehru Centre,  the 'Dance World' Event in London, The Edinburgh international Festival in Scotland, the prestigious 'Eesti Concert Hall' in Tallinn, Estonia; the 'Hellas International Dance Festival’, 'India vision ' for the 50th Anniversary of India's Independence Celebrations in Greece & The Pierce Theatre in Athens; 'Indian Landscapes ', in Rome, Italy, Devayani has placed Bharata Natyam on the map of the world. The consecration of her art came in May 2000 at the XXIVAlgarve International Music Festival in Portugal, where she was given top billings along with the great opera singer Luciano Pavarotti and the star of the Kirov Opera, Olga Borodina. Devayani was selected to represent India officially and perform traditional Indian Dance at the 'World Culture Open ' in Seoul, Korea. Devayani was the only artist from India.

Further , Devayani has performed at The Peace & Friendship Stadium in Athens, Greece for the 20th World Congress on Dance Research and at the Dora Stratou Amphitheatre near the Acropolis for the 21st World Congress on Dance at the invitation of The International Dance Council, National Commission for Unesco, Paris. Devayani has been touring internationally to share her passion and enthusiasm for the Ancient Dance form with wide audiences.

    I have been going to Devayani Dance Academy for over a month now,and i am very happy with my decision. The classes have helped me immensely. Devayani is a trained dancer and thus knows what workout suits my body type.I have always had a weak shoulder and a weak knee,because of which i was skeptic...
