The India Gate is the national monument of India. Situated in the heart of New Delhi, India Gate was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The glorious masterpiece at the heart of the city has become Delhi’s identity. It memorializes the 90,000 soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British Army during the World War I. The foundation stone of India Gate was laid by His Royal Highness, the Duke of Connaught in 1921. Viceroy Lord Irwin dedicated the monument to the nation 10 years later. Another memorial, Amar Jawan Jyoti, an eternal flame was added after India got its independence to remind the nation of soldiers who laid down their lives in the Indo-Pakistan War of December 1971. The lawns around Rajpath are thronged with people during the evening, when the India Gate is lit up. Ice cream and street food vendors come out during this time and it becomes a popular picnic venue for families.

Interesting facts:

- It was originally called the All India War Memorial.

- Serves as venue of Republic Parade every year. The Republic Day Parade starts from Rashtrapati Bhavan and passes through India Gate to reach Red Fort.
