Vaishali Kala Kendra is non profitable registered Trust formed with a view of promoting Odissi dance/vocal music in India.
The rich Indian tradition looks upon ‘Guru’ as none less than a God. ‘Guru is an honorific designation of a preceptor. The guru-shishya parampara denotes a succession of teachers and disciples in traditional Indian culture. It is the tradition of spiritual relationship and mentoring in traditional values where teachings are transmitted from the Guru to the ‘shishya’. It is considered that this relationship, based on the genuineness of the guru, and the respect, commitment, devotion and obedience of the student, is the best way for subtle or advanced knowledge to be conveyed. The student eventually masters the knowledge that the guru embodies.
Vaishali Kala Kendra, since its inception has kept this tradition live in is preamble, teachings and action.
Carrying forward the teachings of great Guru Shrinath Raut , Vaishali Kala Kendra, for more than two decades , organizes “Guru Pranam Utsav” in the memory and honour of the Guru who , dedicated his life proliferating the importance of Odissi as a cultural dance forms across India and beyond. He was the first Odissi guru of Jyoti Shrivastava, the founder of Vaishali Kala Kendra. Guru Durga Charan Ranbir has been the guiding force for Vaishali since Guru Shrinath Raut’s demise.
The institute has been growing multi-dimensional and attracted students from the City as well as faraway places in India. The Institute is dedicated for propagating Odissi Dance in the city where the awareness and popularity of this dance is now quite noticeable. The students of this institute have been giving remarkable performance all over the country and abroad. The Kendra is dedicated towards its mission to see Odissi at the crescent of international fame and glory.
Vaishali Kala Kendra, is one of the few torch bearers of Guru Deb Prasad Das style of Odissi which is the first known form to be known nationally and internationally.
About the Founder of Vaishali Kala Kendra- Smt. Jyoti Shrivastava
Jyoti Shrivastava disciple of late guru Sri Nath Raut and guru Shri Durga Charan Ranbir
As a child Jyoti was initiated into the dance form of Odissi by late Guru Shri Nath Raut. Now Jyoti is under the tutelage of her mentor Guru Shri Durga Charan Ranbir.
Jyoti’s repertoire at present are the dance compositions of Guru Durga Charan Ranbir such as Surya Ashtaka, Ashta Nayika, Dasamahavidya and various intricate Pallavis which are now associated with Jyoti’s dance style and range.
In her career spanning over 35 years she has the privilege of presenting her dance recitals in almost all the major dance festivals in India. She has been deputed by ICCR to perform in countries like Holland, Belgium , Armenia, Russia, Luxemburg, South Korea and Sri Lanka, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain during the festivals of India.
Jyoti is particularly noted for her flair for abhinaya. A dancer of deep commitment towards traditional approach to Odissi she has created a number of new choreographic compositions based on the traditional Chanda and Champu music of Orissa. She had the privilege of working with sutra dance theatre in Malaysia, and Temple of fine arts in Singapore. She also worked with South Korea in Korean Art centre in Seoul.
She recently visited USA for workshops and performances with Lotus and Trinayan.She also worked with established dancer in New York City, like Ray Hesselink and Taiis Pascal.
She is the recipient of Junior Fellowship and National Scholarship from the Department of Culture, Ministry of HRD. She is a visharad in Odissi and an ‘A’ graded artist with Doordarshan.
Every year in the month of April, she organizes Guru Pranam Utsav in the memory of her late Guru Sri Nath Raut.
Recently she Re-choreographed Shri Krishna which was highly appreciated by the press and audience.
At present she runs her own dance institute, Vaishali Kala Kendra. Her students have performed in various festivals in India and abroad. Students of Vaishali Kala Kendra are also recipients of scholarships from CCRT,Govt. of India
This year Jyoti and her disciples performed at the Surya festival in Kerela and the Mukteshwar festival in Orrissa. The performance and her choreography was widely appreciated by the media and audience alike.
Jyoti is also a recipient of Sringar Mani Award 1992, Sanatan Nritya Puruskar in !994, Guru Singhari Shyam Sunder award in 1995, Internatuional Women’s Day Award in 2003, Navratan Award in 2004, Indrani Rehman Award in 2005, Ekta award in 2006, Rotary Award in 2007, Lions International Award also in 2007, Womwn of the Year Award in 2008 by Nation Care and Rajiv Gandhi Ekta Samman in 2009,Surabhi Award-2011.
She was recently awarded the prestigious Mahari award by guru pankaj charan das foundation odisha for her contribution in the field of Odissi.
