When everything else they gave him was best!!

It was time for Mr. Kailash Parashar and Mrs. Seema Parashar to meet the college trustee and Director of their son, Abhishek's college and though they had been sitting in the waiting area for last half an hour, the moment they were told to go in their feet froze...they had been called upon to listen to the final decision to be given on their son's rustication from the college and they knew that how much so ever they will try to explain and tell their side of the story or plead or insist as to how good they have been as parents it would be a futile effort and Abhishek would definitely face rustication...it served him right in a way...

Abhiskek their only son who was just 20 years old and till just a couple of years back a good student and a boy with great future prospects had been found guilty of himself consuming drugs and also encouraging other students to do the same...in fact he was found to be associated with a nexus of drug suppliers who smuggled and supplied drugs to adolescents like him and encouraged them to get deeply involved in this dirty game...he had turned into a complete bully and frequent complaints against him had lead to this...he had bullied people and also duped many of their money including his parents...

The revelation about Abhishek which came a month back was both shocking and shameful for the Parashar couple who themselves were considered ace lawyers and were reputed people of their city and who in the last 25 years had written a rags to riches story for themselves. It was difficult to first believe and then face this reality. Their being lawyers had saved their son a lot of legal and police action for the time being but what was hurting them the most was their failure as parents.....how could their son do all this...he seemed to be fine always...or it was they who thought he was fine when he was actually not?...

They were tired of answering phone calls from friends and acquaintance's which were sometimes real concern and most of the times just a formality from people who were jealous and wanted to embarras them and their life which was till now nothing but perfect for them had turned bitter..   Every talk...every discussion happening amongst themselves and even sometimes with a now rebellious and almost out of hand Abhishek was focussed on questions like What had gone wrong from their side as parents....what made Abhishek do all this...what was their fault... What was to happen now to Abhishek and then to them.

Just a day back before rustication, Seema had cried her heart out inconsolably and was recalling the time when she and Kailash had married each other against their families wishes....she remembered getting disowned from both families and how at that time they were left with nothing but had joined hands to create their own world.. they had struggled day in and day out and decided to become parents only after 5 years of their marriage when they knew they had enough money to bring up their child in luxury... Seema clearly remembered how when Abhishek was just an year old she had joined back work and keeping him under a good nanny she and kailash had worked and worked to one day establish their own law firm....they were always busy..always occupied and were always satisfied that they had given their son the best of everything...the best nannies... the best toys....facilities... luxuries..the best holidays which was the only time they could manage to spent with him properly....the best school...the best tutors....and whatever else he wished for...

Then why?....was it something else he needed which they failed to give?..

Kailash remembered how just till a month back he was brimming with confidence on the golf course when with his friends and flaunting in front of them his status, wealth creation abilities of him self and his wife, their good fortune and the dreams they wanted their son to fulfill ...and how could Seema forget the way she had mocked one of her cousins whom she knew was well qualified but sitting at home taking care of her children or that friend who was a lawyer like her but had decided to grow less and be a little more with her kids...forget that even many of her friends who were excelling in their professions like her had kids who were good ...they had also taken help from nannies and were not present with their kids 24/7...Then why only Abhishek had gone astray...? This question was still not answered..

Days passed and now Abhishek was referred by their Doctor to a rehab...and Kailash and Seema had just come back after admitting him...

Seema was emotionally broken and unable to bear her son's departure from home and that too his going like this was getting unbearable so she had gone to spend some time in his room...

A few moments later when she was fiddling with his things she had caught hold of many pictures and a few papers where Abhishek had written and drawn something... She had almost shouted and called Kailash because in front of her was the answer to the questions that had been haunting her for last many days...

What had gone wrong with Abhishek as a child was in front of them...staring them and even mocking them... and they were pictures of his childhood pasted on papers showing him standing far away from his parents....a beautiful drawing of a home and empty written on it....several test papers where he had scored well and which they had never cared or had the time to see....letters written to them pleading to not leave him alone and spend time with him...letters about how he was not happy with a nanny or a tutor...the story of his loneliness...frustration and finally his rebellion and anger was out there and his parents could do nothing now and were standing blank staring at something...their greed...their penchant for money and more money and fame had resulted in their child taking the wrong path...they gave him everything else exception a share of their time..closeness and probably even love...which he badly needed...they had miserably failed at striking a work life balance...and giving their child a share of their life..

They now knew that their child was alone..sensitive...scared and in spite of everything best they had provided him, he missed his parents ...he wanted them by his side at least sometimes...he wanted to share so much which they never had the time to listen ..he had a secret wish for a sibling and being alone mostly had driven him towards this illusionary happiness and escape from reality that the world of drugs can give...

None but they themselves were to be blamed for what had happened to their son and even when everything they did was correct according to them they had failed..

This write up is just a story but can be a reality for someone. It is true that today life is no more what it used to be decades back. Simple..complacent and a little free.. it seems that everyone is in a race to achieve more. Money is important..people want to earn more and thus sometimes out of choice and other times due to circumstances people and specially women or mother's to be precise have to work and earn. It is easier said than done but these days every individual is stressed and is seen struggling to balance his or her work and family life..following ones dreams....becoming financially secure...living a good life is not bad or wrong and it's a personal choice that one makes but going overboard on that and just being a guest parent for your kids doesn't work...you have to be present... You have to be there for your kids and spend quality time with them...you need to know what's happening in their lives and I personally feel that more than things our children need us and our time...

I also want to say that this applies to both parents as the kid belongs to both of them equally and they both are partners in their kids upbringing..and if both of them play their part correctly... Cooperate and help each other things will become easier and there will be no kid who will ever feel alone...and go through an experience so unfortunate like Abhishek...
