How technology is affecting kids socially and Academically

human being is a social being and no-one can thrive alone in this world. Children have been introduced to many technological devices that is potentially pushing them into solitude . This is an alarming trend that has developed with the advent of 21st century. Kids today are growing up in a far different world then they were just ten years ago . { i got my first cellphone when i was in 10th standard and nowadays kids have access to latest version of smart phones from such an early age of 3 or 4 years!!!} constantly communicating and always on: that’s the latest trend. In these fast paced times, texting is after all, a way to get a quick response. It’s also a way to communicate a topic that may otherwise be difficult. Its a trend among teens to broke things off with someone over text. { and i guess many adults also do this}. kid’s say that it makes bit easier if you don’t want to say it to their face.. But what i personally feel that “‘easy way” is a big concern in this digital age. When we are doing face-to-face interaction , we can read someone’s facial expressions, and can listen for the pauses whenever they’re speaking. those thing’s we can not pick up on whenever we are texting a friend , or facebooking, or instagramming. These emotions and feelings helps a kid or teen to become more sensible or responsible towards society and mankind.

According to a survey carried out by Stanford university , young girls who multitask with various digital applications like facebook, youtube and other social sites app are facing the risk of becoming social hermits. Kids have to learn about emotion, and the way they do that is really by paying attention to other people. they have to really look them in the eye. Multitasking with different types of technological devices, smart phones, mp3 players, i-pads etc is the hip thing nowdays . The era of playstation might have made the world a safer place for children because they don’t have to go out for play but has definitely complicated it for them by taking away their childhood. Because we all know outdoor activity is must for a child’s overall development. children and kid’s learn life lessons by interacting with people. Research shows that children who have regular play dated with other children will learn to fight for their rights because they will fight for themselves when someone tries to cheat them. What i personally feel today’s families are different. Technology’s impact on 21st century family is fracturing its foundation and causing a disintegration of core values that long ago were the fabric that held families together. Juggling school, home, work and community lives parents now rely heavily on technology to make their lives faster and more efficient. Children now rely on technology for the majority of their play, grossly limiting challenges to their creativity and imagination, as well as limiting necessary challenges to their bodies to achieve optimal sensory and motor development. The impact of rapidly advancing technology on the developing child has seen as increase of physical , psychological and behavior disorders .  The sad thing is that due to increasing technology, children have been found going away from their moral values. Internet is working as curse for children’s character, rather than using internet in productive manner, children use it as source of adult content. Technology also has negative impact on children’s writing skills…while writing text messages , no one cares about the spelling , punctuation and grammar.  smartphones are like cocaine children. A study shows that digital screens affect the brain exactly like cocaine. That means your kid’s brain on mine craft looks like A BRAIN ON DRUGS. A study found that electronic devices affect the Brain’s Frontal cortex. Children who overuse technology report persistent body sensations of overall shaking, increased breathing and heart rate and a general state of ”unease”…..its important to come together as parents, teachers and therapist to help society wake up and see the devastating effects technology is having not only on our child’s physical, psychological and behavioral health , but also on their ability to learn and sustain personal and family relationships.  But there are some tips which can be beneficial for you to save your children from negative and harmful effect of technology:

  1. Set a limited time each day for devices. store them away when they’re not in use.
  2. Television and other media devices should be should be avoided entirely for infants and children under age 2. for older kids, to help them make wise media choices, parents should monitor their media diet and content.
  3. Age restrictions on technology are an appropriate guideline
  4. Technology is changing the way we relate to one another, but face-to-face conversation is still important in the present.
  5. we should make children believe and understand that their self-worth can not be calculated by likes and shares.
  6. we should tell them that they should not believe everything they see on the internet.
  7. And most important spend quality time with your children, play with them or engage in any outdoor activities.
what i feel parenting requires a healthy balance of humility and fierce resolve. Are there any important strategies you have implemented with your kids that you think are important to add then please let me know. Suggestions are welcome.
