In summers, the temperature in Ahmedabad can rise to a scorching 45 degrees! If you are like me, you are constantly on the lookout for places and things to do with your kids despite the heat. Summer vacations are in full swing and children demand new activities and places to visit regardless of the rising temperatures. To help you beat the heat, mycity4kids brings you some cool ideas to beat the heat this summer.

Hit the water parks 

Water parks are an all-time favorite among kids and adults both and luckily for us, there are quite a few water parks in and around Ahmedabad. 

Shanku’s Water Park & Resort

Location: Ahmedabad-Mehsana Highway

This is a very popular water park and resort around 55 kms from Ahmedabad. Shanku’s has rides for every age. Try the wave pool, kids corner, lazy river, aqua shuttles and racing slides. Food courts, shaded rest areas are ideal for those who want to just enjoy the water park. Adjacent to the water park, is their 3-star resort, which is a great option for those wishing to stay the night and enjoy water rides the next day as well.

Chill at the snow parks

Kids love to play in snow and beam with joy at the mention of visiting a snow park. There are two snow parks- one close to Ahmedabad and another which has recently opened in the city. 

Maniar’s Wonderland & Snow Park

Location: Maniar Wonderland, Sarkhej Chowkdi, Sanand, Ahmedabad

10 minutes from Ahmedabad, is the Maniar Wonderland. It houses a snow park, a family waterpark and other exciting rides for the whole family. The snow park with temperatures at -15 degrees has many fun rides, snow play area and artificial igloos for kids and elders to enjoy.

Iceberg Snow World

The newly opened Ice Berg Snow World, is the first indoor snow park in Ahmedabad and boasts of multitude of attractions for the kids and adults alike. The attractions include, sledding, igloos, snow rope climbing, an ice bar and a dance bar. At a temperature of -5 degrees, it promises to ‘chill’ their patrons.

Relish cool and delicious ice-golas

Relish a crushed ice candy or barf gola which are not only delicious but also leave you feeling cool. Barf gola shops are a hit among sweet loving Amdavadis and many are so famous that people have to literally queue for a long time to enjoy their favorite flavors. The innovation in terms of flavors and presentation style they offer is mind boggling.

Make a splash for the pools

There are also many clubs within and in the outskirts of Ahmedabad with huge swimming pools. If you are not a member, you can maybe join in with your member-friend and enjoy an evening chilling in the pool and participating in other activities at the club with your family.

Take a walk by the Sabarmati Riverfront

Enjoy a walk along the Sabarmati riverfront which is a two level continuous promenade at the waters edge along each bank of the Sabarmati River. The lower level promenade is just above water level to serve visitors, pedestrians and cyclists.  The upper and lower level promenade together provides the pedestrians and cyclists with an uninterrupted walkway nearly 11.5 km in length. 

Kids can play in the well-designed gardens along the riverfront. You can also take a boating ride in the river.

Go boating at Kankaria Lake

Location: Maninagar, Ahmedabad

Take a boating ride at the famous Kankaria Lake. A morning or late evening stroll along the lakefront is quite refreshing as well. In the evenings, the lake is lit beautifully with synchronized lights, which add to its charm. Kids can also engage in other water rides. In the centre of the lake is the Nagina Wadi, which can be approached by a walkway from one point of the circular lake. A half-day trip to Gandhinagar & water show at Akshardham temple


Enjoy a half day trip to Gandhinagar which is full of greenery and cooler compared to Ahmedabad. Visit to the Zanzari Water Falls

Location: Dehgam, Gujarat

Around 65 kms from Ahmedabad is the Zanzari Water Falls situated on the rocky zone of river Vatrak. The road leading to the falls is narrow so it is recommended to take your private vehicle and pack some food along. The distance from the parking to the falls can be covered by walking or by taking camel rides. Best time to visit in summers is in the morning from 6 to 9 am.

Visit to the Nalsarovar and Thol lake


Location: Dehgam, Gujarat

Nalsarovar around 60 km from Ahmedabad is a natural shallow lake and largest wetland bird sanctuary in Gujarat. While the best time to visit is from November to March, one can also enjoy the pleasant weather in the early mornings or late evenings in summers.  To beat the heat, leave early in the morning and take a boating ride in the lake. Entry fees to the lake and boating fees are separate. While boating fees are fixed by the government, but one needs to bargain heavily with the boatman as they charge exorbitantly.

Location: Thol Village, Kalol, Gujarat

Thol Lake is another wetland and bird sanctuary, half an hour drive from Ahmedabad. Though boating is not allowed inside the lake, but one can enjoy by walking around the periphery of the lake in the mornings and evenings. There is also a watch tower and a small garden where children can play. Carry your binoculars to enjoy bird watching.

A religious visit to Amarnath Dham

Location: Amarpur, Near Swapna Shrushti Water Park, Gandhinagar-Mahhudi Highway, Gandhinagar

Pay homage to the Amarnath dham at Gandhinagar, which is the replica of Amarnath dham at Jammu & Kashmir; one of the four dhams as per Hindu mythology. About 45 minutes from Ahmedabad it is a 5 feet high shiv-ling made of pure ice in a man-made cave. The replicas of the twelve sacred ‘Jyotirlings’ are also kept there for darshan. The cave remains cool because of the ice shiv-ling. An amazing way to beat the heat and also get educated about the rich Hindu mythology.

Head to the Hills

An all-time favourite!! There are two hill stations which can be reached within 4-5 hours by road from Ahmedabad. One can head to them over the weekend and enjoy a mini vacation. 

Mount Abu

Located in the Aravalli range of Rajasthan, near the Gujarat border, Mount Abu is a popular hill station. It is referred to as an oasis in the desert as it is home to rivers, lakes, waterfalls and evergreen forests. Among other tourist attractions are the Nakki lake, wildlife sanctuary, sunset point, hiking and camping tours and many ancient Hindu and Jain temples.  It is ideal for a weekend getaway. 

Saputara Hill Station

Saputara located in the Dang district is the only hill station of Gujarat and has been developed with amenities like hotels, parks, swimming pools, boat club, ropeway and a museum. Nearby excursions can also be made to Purna wild life sanctuary and Gira waterfalls. Good respite from the heat amidst the lap of nature.

Sleep on the terrace

Go old school and head to the terrace. If you are staying in a high-rise apartment, all the better. Ahmedabad is really hot the entire day but you will be really surprised how cool it gets on the terrace in the evening. Sleeping under the open sky, surrounded by natural cool breeze at night, chit chatting with the family and waking up at sunrise will be a completely cool and refreshing experience. Give it a try!
