Cool Things To Do To Beat The Heat In Chennai!

I don’t know about you, but this summer vacation seems unending to me, and the heat doesn't speed things along either! Being cooped up indoors with my two kids isn’t my idea of a great way to spend this Summer (although if I’m being honest, I have done A LOT of that!). So I’ve had to be creative and come up with some fun alternatives to spending entire days trudging through Malls (which is probably my least favourite things to do in this world!) Here are some “cool” ideas for you to keep cool in Chennai! Be warned- some of these ideas involve us stepping outside and being active…but I promise you will feel revived and your kids will have blast!

The Anna Centenary Library

Location - Gandhi Mandapam Road, Kotturpuram, Surya Nagar

Ok so why did I start with a library? If you’ve never been here, it’s unlike anything you have ever seen in Chennai! Spread over eight floors, the Children’s Section itself (on the first floor) is over 15,000 sq.ft and houses over 60,000 books!

I have spent many hours with my kids here and they always want to go back. The kids’ section is bright and fun. They have such a diverse range of books, you can easily find something that will interest your child, no matter what their age. They have kids books in Indian and foreign languages- Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, German, French, Spanish and Italian to name a few! They also have computers that your kids can use to access Multimedia. The entire building is centrally air-conditioned (YAY!!!) and this whole experience is FREE! They even have a bakery on the ground floor, so you can buy your little ones a snack on your way out!

They also have fun events they plan for kids like interactive storytelling fairly regularly so check out their website to know more about that. I cannot recommend this place enough!

Timings- 8am to 9pm

Theosophical Society- The Huddleston Gardens

Location-  Durgabai Deshmukh Road, Adyar

The Theosophical Society garden lies on the south bank of the Adyar River and covers 260 acres. It is so lush and beautiful that taking a walk or having a picnic under the canapé of trees in the evening is a wonderful way to relax with your kids. There is so much shade and the trees really cut the heat! You will be able to enjoy nature and even some wildlife right in the heart of our city. If your kids are nature buffs, this is a great place for them to explore.

Timings- Mornings 8:30am to10:00am/ Evening 2:00pm to 4:00 pm. Closed on Sundays.

Cost: Free

Location- 89, Bishop Garden, Off Greenways road , RA Puram

I just went here two days ago with four kids in tow (ranging from one to six years old) and I knew that I had to write about it. All the kids had so much fun, they didn't want to leave.

What I really loved was that kids could play indoors as well as outdoors! The outdoor space includes a giant outdoor play structure, sand and water play, a trampoline and space for running around. The indoor area is child proof and features a large indoor play gym area, an activity/ quiet corner and a charming pretend play corner! They also have a really fun petting zoo- how great is that? So while my kids were having a blast, I got to relax with a SUPER coffee from their café! They have snacks and beverages that will make your kids very happy after all that playing!

One thing that that I noticed was that all their helpers were really polite and very good with the kids. Weebies allows you to drop off your kids with them if you need to go and run some errands or get to an appointment. So next time you’re looking for a place to take your kids to which has a little something for you as well take them here!

Timings- 9:00 am to 7:00 pm (Mon- Sun)

Age- 9 months to 6 years

Cost- Rs.250 for the first 2 hours if you’re going to stay with your child. /Rs. 250 for the first hour and then Rs.150 per hour, if you’re going to drop your kids off to be supervised by their staff.

Laser tag has become all the rage in Chennai! Laser tag is a team or individual sport or recreational activity where players attempt to score points by tagging targets, typically with a hand-held infrared-emitting targeting device. Its SO MUCH FUN! Kids over 5 years can play and if you can get a group of families together, there would be nothing like it. So Laser Tag Chennai Battlefield has a custom designed arena that will ensure that everyone has a blast. Please don’t be worried if you have never done something like this before, the staff is great and will help you with everything you need. Also essentially its just point and shoot  ..its painless!

The Farm- Life on the Udder Side

Location- 1/277, Semmancherry Village, Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR)

If you’ve been in Chennai for any length of time, the chances are you would have heard of or visited The Farm. My family LOVES this place. It doesn't have any of the frills that most kids places have, it stays true to its name. They have a lot of shade and trust me you wont notice the heat as you walk around.

The kids can feed the animals, pet them, and depending on the time of day, even participate in the milking process. Older children are welcome to pluck vegetables. After the farm walk, they can try their hand at making pizza.  You can have an incredible meal at their restaurant and buy lots of farm fresh goodies to take home with you. Pets are welcome, so its truly a place for the whole family.

They also run a bed and breakfast at the farm. Staying over is the best way to get into the swing of country living – You can do all the things that famers do! So if your family is looking for an interesting, nature-filled experience to beat the heat this summer…look no further!

Timings- They open from 7.30am on all days, except Mondays. The best time for a walk is around 4 pm. Farm Walks close by 5 p.m. (Weekends can be busy so, it’s advisable to call before visiting).

Cost: There are different packages so call them to know more.

Bombay Kulfi

Location- No, 1, 3rd Cross St, Shastri Nagar, Adyar

Timings- 11.00am to 11.00pm on all 7 days of the week

Ok! No post on keeping cool in Chennai can be complete without ice cream or in this case Kulfi! Bombay Kulfi is the latest obsession in my house! The outlet is small but always crowded! Their Kulfis and ice creams are authentic and will have you returning there the next day (I am NOT exaggerating)! They have such a great variety of flavours- my favourite is their tender coconut ice cream. My kids love their natural Mango ice cream. Everything tastes fresh and natural. It's a welcome change to the run of the mill ice cream parlours you find at every corner in Chennai. So please make up an excuse and head over there with your little ones.

The Chennai Metro Rail

Location- Alandur to Koyambedu

Timings- 6am to 10 pm (trains leave every 15 min)

Cost- Rs.10- 40

A few weeks back my family decided to go for a ride on the Chennai Metro and we LOVED it!  It is such a great experience to have with your kids. The trains are really well maintained and air-conditioned . The view outside is really incredible. The best part is that it’s not at all crowded any time of the day, we had the entire coach to ourselves! The only line that's running at the moment is between Alandur and Koyambedu. Everything from buying the tickets to going through the turnstiles and the actual ride itself will be super fun for your kids and yourself! So take a ride on the Chennai Metro Rail soon and experience Chennai in a new way.
