Kids Theatre Festival at Rangashankara

The enchanting world of theatre and plays has always been synonymous with adults. But every once in a while, the magic door to this kingdom opens up to allow kids. This July, Ranagshankara presents its 2014 edition of AHA! International Theatre for Children. The 11 day festival from July 10th - 20th, 2014 will see a delightful ensemble of plays, puppet shows, object theatre, classical theatre and clown acts brought together from Israel, Korea, Delhi and Mumbai.

This year’s highlights include the launch of an international collaboration with Germany’s Schnawwl Theatre and Figurentheatre of Switzerland; a Yakshagana performance by kids form the Yaksha Kendra, Udupi; and plays by Taroo, a Korean classical music group.




Name of the play: Butterfly Kiss

Date: June 10th and  11th, 2014

Timings: 7.30 p.m.

 Duration: 45 mins

 Age group: 2 - 6 years

Butterfly Kiss is a one woman, non verbal show that tells the story of a young girl running after the butterflies she has collected. Before she lets them free again, she wants to get a last butterfly kiss. She will reach it with the children's help from the audience. The show is a fabulous experience for every young child (from the age of two) through which he will explore the magical world of theatre using hand puppets, digital art and toys. As part of the performance , the actress dances with the audience and lets them touch her butterflies. There is no “fourth wall”, no illusion. Children are a part of the show. They sit on the floor, very close to the stage, upon small cloud-carpets that hide a surprise beneath them and some of them even go on stage with the actress.




Name of the play: Squirrel’s Birthday

 Date: June 19th and 20th, 2014

 Duration: 50 mins

 Age group: 4 - 6 years

 Fees: Rs. 200

 The ‘Squirrel’s Birthday’ is about the squirrel deciding to celebrate his birthday with his friends. The squirrel writes letters in his own handwriting on pieces of bark to all his friends right from the whale in the ocean to the firefly, inviting everyone for his birthday. Based on stories written by Dutch writer and poet, Toon Tellegen, ‘Squirrel’s Birthday’, uses puppetry and miniature theatre to bring his story to life.  Swiss puppeteer

 The act uses puppetry and miniature theatre to bring his story to life with Margrit Gysin   an expert in mini puppetry.




Name of the play: The Tiger with White Eyebrows

 Date: June 16th and 17th, 2014

 Timings: 7.30 p.m.

 Duration: 60 mins

 Age group:  6 years and older

 Fees: Rs. 200

 Pansori is is a Korean genre of musical storytelling performed by a vocalist and a drummer.

 ‘The Tiger with White Eyebrows’ is a pansori musical with 4 singers as storytellers. The story revolves around a thousand-year old tiger who lived in the deep woods and had white eyebrows which had a special power to read people's minds. He used to eat people with impure hearts. One day, the tiger meets a child who wanted to touch his eyebrows, to which the tiger said that he can do that only if his soul was pure, failing which he would eat him. To his surprise, the child’s soul and mind were immaculate and hence the tiger gave one of his eyebrows to the child who began to travel all over the country. Find out about this special child from this impeccable act.

 Date: July 13th, 2014

Duration: 45 mins

 Age group:  8 years and older

Can a superhero solve all your problems? Nini wants to be a singer, but she is scared to sing. She is convinced that a superhero will come and rescue her one day. That's when she can finally burst into song.

 Herose-Werose is a devised physical comedy performance piece in English and gibberish, put together by Rupesh Tillu, artistic director of Theatreact.
