Menstrual Acceptance? Indian Company is Introducing Menstrual Leave

Periods suck. Ask any woman and she will agree hundred percent. During that time of the month, the code red is also a warning signal to not to meddle with her leaky affairs. Or else, she wouldn’t hesitate to snake out her invisible dagger at you. Courtesy: bloating, cramps, mood swings and everything else that can be blamed to hormonal locha.

Even if you are one of those lucky women for whom periods pass like a breeze, it’s not a very comfortable situation to be in. Just imagine the plight of working ladies who have to spend at least 6-8 hours a day at workplace commuting, cramming in chairs and attending meetings. Sadly, the Indian corporate world does not have any ‘period policy’ for their female employees.

But, a Mumbai-based company Culture Machine is set to change the norm. It has introduced ‘First Day of Period Leave’ policy starting this month. As per this policy, their female workforce can formally take a day off on the first day of their periods, without quoting awkward excuses or taking a cut in their regular leave balance. Needless to say, the company’s women employees, who are 75 in number and represent more than 1/3rd of the total workforce, are celebrating this move. No more bloody day for them!

The policy was announced on Culture Machine’s Facebook page and YouTube channel ‘Blush’. The video was filmed in hush-hush, featuring its women folk and even male bosses/colleagues who were not aware of this change. When they were told for the first time about the new policy, their reactions were just awesome. Watch the video here.

This bold initiative is also the company’s attempt to break the taboo around menstruation in the workplaces and make its culture more women-friendly. In order to extend this right to the rest of women in India, the company is urging everyone to sign this petition which will be submitted to Ministry of Woman and Child Development, and Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Surprisingly, Culture Machine is not the pioneer of menstrual leave. Two more Indian companies – IndustryARC in Hyderabad and Gozoop in Mumbai already have such provisions in place. Across the world, countries like Taiwan, China, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan and Italy offer paid menstrual leave.
