One of the oldest and most beautiful art forms of the world, Indian classical music can be divided into two broad categories: Hindustani and Carnatic. Both these music forms use a number of instruments which are known for their intricate rhythm and soulful melodies. Instruments most commonly used in Hindustani classical music are the sitar, sarod, bansuri, shehnai, sarangi, and tabla; while instruments commonly used in Carnatic classical music include the veena, mridangam, kanjira, and violin.

One of the oldest music schools in Delhi which impart training in classical music, Gandharva Mahavidyalaya was established in 1939 by Shri Vinaya Chandra Maudgalya, an eminent musicologist, teacher and educationist. Many popular artists like Richa Sharma and Kailash Kher were students here once upon a time.  The aim of the school is to preserve the essence of Hindustani Classical and make it integral to contemporary culture. Here classes are offered in sitar, flute, harmonium and tabla. Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra


Location: 1, Copernicus Marg, New Delhi 

Minimum Age: Above 8 years

Instruments Taught: Sitar, Tabla and Sarod

Admission process: The admission process starts every year in the month of June and the new session starts on 1st July. Currently the forms are available. 

Fees: Rs. 1200 per month, standard for any instrument that you choose.

Courses: Foundation, Certificate, Diploma and Post-Diploma courses 

This institutes beginning can be traced to a small but exclusive sponsoring body called ‘Jhankar’ which was set up in 1947. With its spacious campus grounds and a star studded faculty of seasoned musicians it provides a culturally stimulating environment for any student who enrolls here. The institute offers courses in sitar, sarod and tabla. The famous Kamani auditorium and an extensive print and audio – visual library are part of its premises.  Their students take pride in displaying their acquired instrumental skills in the annual Ramlila event, which is witnessed by thousands of people every year. Triveni Kala Sangam

Minimum Age: 6 years above

Instruments Taught: Tabla, Sitar and Flute

Admission process: For admission a form needs to be filled at the center. Currently the institute is being renovated so the admission process will begin in the month of July.

Fees: Depends on the Instrument 

Courses: Both short term and long term

Established in 195O by Padma Shri  Sundari K. Shirdharani, Triveni Kala Sangam had a humble origin with a single room  above the famous Connaught Place Coffee House catering to just two students. After receiving a special grant from Pt Nehru himself, the school relocated to Mandi House where it continues to be a confluence of all art forms. A non-profit registered society with a sprawling art complex, the institute conducts courses in tabla, sitar and flute at a nominal fee.

Saraswati Music College

Established in 1924 Saraswati Music College has some illustrious alumni, including veterans like Pt. Jasraj, Mohammad Rafi and O.P. Nayyar. As one of the oldest and the most reputed music schools of Delhi, it offer courses in harmonium, flute, table and dholak. The infrastructure of the institute is quite well equipped with a recording studio, the latest instruments and separate classrooms for all the courses. Instruments Taught: Sitar, Tanpura, Fute, Harmonium, Tabla, Pakhawaj and Dholak (depends on the individual centre)

Admission process: Admission process is quite flexible. They take new students every month. 

Fees: Depends on the instrument

Courses: Diploma, Bachelor, Master Degree and Doctoral Level programs

Tansen Sangeet Mahavidyalaya is a unit of Tansen Institute of Performing Arts. The aim of the institute is to make music and performing arts available to everyone across the country. The institute is spread over the entire city with multiple centers both in Delhi & NCR. It has its own production house, wherein they launch students for a career in music and dance. Individual attention to each student is given as one batch has no more than 5-7 students. Seminars, workshops and stage shows happen every quarter to let students showcase their talent.
