Tour De Pune! Great Places To Bike With Your Child

“It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them.”

- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling is perhaps one of the first joys of life that people experience in their childhood. Never mind a few injuries that come along with it! Cycling is an activity that has fun, fitness and freedom rolled into one and is a great way for children to burn off their energy.

Unfortunately, most children don’t get an opportunity to cycle their way around the city. The primary reason being the lack of dedicated cycling tracks and terrains. That’s quite surprising given the fact that Pune was once known as the city of bicycles and is the second city (after Chennai) in the country with the highest number of households owning bicycles. Though Pune Municipal Corporation has constructed cycling tracks on various roads, they have either fallen prey to encroachment by hawkers, beggars and slum dwellers or are being used for garbage disposal and two wheeler vehicle parking. A sorry state of affairs, indeed!

The good news is that there are a few places in the city where you can take your kids for safe cycling. So, mount your kids’ bicycles in your car and head to the following places, preferably during the early morning hours.

Vetal Tekdi

Also known as ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India)) Tekdi, this hill range is the highest point of the city. This green belt is frequented by joggers, bird watchers and nature lovers owing to lush green trees, beautiful flowers and a variety of species of local and migratory birds. Vetal Tekdi wears a new look every season that will leave you mesmerized. A few kms enroute to this hill, there is an open space where you can park your car and explore the hill on a bicycle with your children.

Taljai Tekdi

Another popular hillock in the city for the residents to experience a quiet time amidst the colours of nature. The climb leads to the temple of Goddess Talijai and gives a 360 degree view of the city from the top. It also has a jogging track and a huge playground, which are also apt for cycling. You can access them between 5:00 am to 9:00 am and 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. There is also a haunted house here with many stories around it that attracts the visitors.

Necklace Road

If you ever trace the route from Savitribai Phule Pune University to Chandni Chowk on the city map, it will look like a necklace. This is how it gets its name and makes it one of the most favourite routes for cyclists to paddle on.

Mycity4kids tip: Try this route with your children only if they are old enough to understand traffic rules and can watch out for vehicles. But, in any case, they should go cycling on this route only in the early hours of the day and under your strict supervision.

The Temghar Lavasa road with its hairpin turns is one of the most adventurous cycling tracks for professional and veteran cyclists. However, for children, the cycling fun starts after entering Lavasa city. You can either hire a Segway or hop on your own bicycle to explore the place.

How to reach: Take this route - Chandani Chowk – Paud Road – Pirangut – SH57 – Temghar Dam – Lavasa Ghat Road- Lavasa city

Mycity4kids tip: The Waterfront Promenade at Lavasa with its cobbled pavement is best suited for cycling, especially for toddlers.
