Tutorial - Make your own flower Rangoli this Diwali.

Irrespective of its name this art form is practiced by the whole of India- rich and poor alike.
This is an art form for all festivals and celebrations. The Rangoli design is created everyday, hence you get a new rangoli with a new dawn. The method may be dry or wet and colours may range from rice or wheat powder, turmeric powder, roli( red powder used for the forehead) to synthethic powder colours available in the stores. The material used today varies from coloured sand, lentils, sawdust to flowers and enamel paint. The designs used are traditional and in tune with the occasion for which they are drawn.

The idea of making a rangoli is to ward off evil and welcome everybody to the house. On Diwali we believe that if your house is clean and well lit than Goddess Lakshmi – the Goddess of Wealth will visit. Thus the rangoli drawn has to be connected and closed so that no evil can enter the design.

The patterns are generally circular or in a square. They can also form a border along the wall. The size of the rangoli depends on the space available. It is drawn from the centre moving outwards. Generally women making a rangoli are a treat to watch. Using dry powder with their 4 fingers creating ridges, it adds dimension to the design. Earlier the pattern were made on mud floors coated with a layer of cow dung, husk and mud. Today you can buy stencils to create the designs on the floor
