Time flies. In a jiffy. Especially when you are away from work. One moment you are in the hospital, holding your bundle of joy and thinking about the next 6 months which you will spend thoroughly enjoying motherhood. You blink and it’s time to take the next step and re-enter the corporate world. From feeds to finance, from burps to business, from naps to network, from diapers to deals – it is like teleporting from Disneyland to Wall Street.
You would have spent countless hours planning about how to make this transition easy for your baby. Arranging for a trustworthy care-giver, providing for required feeds, getting the baby used to a tentative schedule, doing mock-runs of your work day, you have done it all. But have you ever given a thought about how to make this transition easy for your own self?
A lot of times, we take ourselves for granted. “Well it’s just getting back to work, what’s the big deal?”“I have been doing this all these years before I went on my maternity leave.” While things may eventually fall in place one way or the other, your career certainly is not something to be taken lightly, particularly when you have decided to go back to work, keeping your precious little one back at home.
1. Stay Connected
While you enjoy the time with your little one away from the daily grind, make an attempt & stay connected with not only your colleagues at work but also with the latest developments in your field. This will ensure that you do not feel obsolete on your return.
2. Define your goals
Define and chart out a plan towards achieving your goals. While some of your goals can be ambitious ones too, it’s important to start off with something SMART i.e. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. Keep going back to check how you are faring on your goals and do course correction as and when required.
3. Contingency Planning
Just as you always have a fall back mechanism at home when it comes to any arrangement pertaining to your child, do contingency planning at work too. This will enable business continuity even if you are indisposed or unavailable due to any unavoidable reason. Having a backup will also give you that much needed peace of mind.
4. Dress Up
If there is one sure shot way to boost your confidence, then it is to dress-up. Sharp power-dressing may not affect your skills when it comes to client & internal interactions but it will work wonders for your confidence. Always keep in mind the importance of creating the right first impression.
Last but not the least - don’t be too hard on yourself. As long as you do not lose focus, it is fine to take a step back once in a while as your make progress towards your goals. Take a deep breath and relax!
The world is waiting out there to welcome you back to where you belong. Just as having a baby should not change the way people perceive you, it also should not change the way you perceive your career. So step out with your head held high coz the world is your oyster!
