Mundan Ceremony: Why it’s and it’s not Important?

I have been long asked by my dear ones when I am going to perform my son's Mundan ceremony(shaving child’s head) as he is now two and a half year old and this ceremony must be performed either in the first or third year.  I am going to accept it that I don’t really want to shave his head(thankfully, my son has got nice hairs) as I don’t much like shaved head and moreover I’m not convinced with most of the reasons my society gives me to do it.

I am going to write about something many Indians would raise their eyebrows. In most Indian communities(including mine), mundan is done with the belief that it purifies the child.

It is believed that carrying out the mundan ceremony takes care of the following aspects of the child, noted by people who believes in it and research in internet(reading complete post will tell you why I am not agreed with half of these points):

  1. The child gets a better future
  2. The child gets a long life
  3. To rid the child of negativities and sins from his/her past birth.
  4. The  ceremony also cleans the body and the soul of the child
  5. It is good as the head of the child can be cool in summers
  6. A child who is teething requires mundan ceremony to feel more comfortable and relaxed.
  7. It is also good for the better hair growth of the child
  8. The mundan ceremony also improves the strength of the nerves in the brain of the child.
  9. The child must let go of the past life and start a new life so the mundan ceremony is vital.

Here, apart from reason number 5,6,7 and 8, I strongly condemn all.

Let’s discuss all other reasons in brief:

The child gets a better future: Isn’t it a very illogical thing to believe that shaving of head or mundan ensures a child better future. A child’s future entirely depends upon his past Karmic account, his present life decisions, and his upbringing. If just mundan was enough to ensure a better future, we all could have a good life without much effort.

The child gets a long life: I feel this reason as funny. The duration of every soul is fixed in every birth, no sooner or later it leaves a body. It is just another blind faith of our religion.

To rid the child of negativities and sins from his/her past birth: There is no way to escape from the result of sins and negativities of past birth of a soul. If getting rid of a misdeed was so easy, everyone would have been leading a beautiful and abundant life by just having done Mundan in their childhood.

The ceremony also cleans the body and the soul of the child: There are hairs in other parts of the body too when a child is born such as eyebrows, eyelashes, and body hairs, why then only shaving of head cleans the body. A Soul is purified by learning knowledge of wisdom, making a connection with God(Yoga), doing Purushartha( making efforts to achieve all virtues), remembering God while doing daily chores. There is no other shortcut to clean the soul.

The child must let go of the past life and start a new life: A child has hardly any sense to understand past life memories, so how could a mundan ceremony helps him to let go past life and start a new life?

Therefore, Dear Mummies, it is a wise decision to go for Mundan if you are looking for following benefits:

  • To keep the head cool during summers.
  • Helps relieve a headache and pains caused by teething
  • For the better hair growth of the child
  • The mundan improves the strength of the nerves in the brain of the child.

My Research ends here to support my decision of not shaving my son’s head till I feel the need of it because of above-given four reasons.

P.S: I have no intention to hurt or offend the sentiments of any individual or community. These are my personal views and beliefs. I believe we all should have very clear reasons for doing something. So it’s better to know the reason if you are following certain rituals in your life. It will help you to relieve from any unnecessary burden.
