Monsoon weekend activity

“Wow the rains are here!” does become “Aaargh! The rains are here.” for parents when they run out of ideas on how to keep their child / children engaged on a rainy day.

Well there could never be a better time to learn about using rainwater. A few things which you can teach your kids are:

  • Just get your child to place a tub or a bucket in the balcony to collect direct rainwater.
  • Teach your child to use that to water the plants at home or to clean the house floor or to wash their own little socks or hand towels.
  • If your child is old enough to read and comprehend information then get him to read about rainwater harvesting. Ask them how they could think of doing the same in their building or at school.
  • If your child is in grade 4 and above then teach them to make a powerpoint presentation on their understanding of rainwater harvesting.

If your child is a preschooler then it is your best chance to teach them about how clouds form and how they come down as rain. Follow simple steps to give them a practical example of cloud formation.

  • Just pour reasonable hot water in a small bowl.
  • Cover it with a plate.
  • Now lift the plate to show the same process through a small experiment.

You can also teach them why it is important to keep their hands and feet clean during the rains especially as water carry harmful bacteria that can easily spread as diseases during rain.

If your child is an infant or toddler, then:

  • Feed them well.
  • Wrap them in warm clothes.
  • Strap them to your car seat and set out for a drive.
  • Make sure you carry warm water and dry snack.
  • Also, keep the stock of diapers on the higher side.

No matter what you do, just remember to relax and enjoy your weekend.
