It is the malediction of the patriarchal system, we Indians are victimised by feeding the stereotypes and fulfilling the demands of the heinous dowry seekers. Who takes the charge of this, catastrophe? Parents of the groom, or the parents of the bride? Unfortunately, 'Ostentatious Dowry' is strategically linked to 'Pride and Status. On one hand, the groom's family flaunts the exorbitant bidding of their son by basking in pride, their son's ability to attract the hefty ransom. On the other hand, the bride's family overstates themselves by doing everything in grandeur. Lavish food spread, sumptuous gourmets, exuberant decorations, extravagant designer sarees, and exquisite jewellery. They swag splendidly! It's disheartening to know that this pomp and show reveals, the parents love for their daughter.
Why is a male child in India treated as a commodity? Why is it associated with the trademark and ascribed by the features that appease the needs and requirements of the 'Consumer" - the bride's family? Both parties decide to form a relation, either as a 'Buyer or seller' based on their abilities to do either. All parents are unintentionally following typical market strategies and the attributes of an entrepreneur who wants to promote the product through any accessible way to captivate the buyer's interest. The irony is all commodities we purchase are not tried and tested by the consumer and often at times the delivery, we get in hands is not up to the mark. So as in the case of marriage, we buy our daughter's happiness at the cost of persuading others.
Whom do we want to prove, ourselves?Do we satisfy our own ego?Do we presume that by giving extravagant gifts, our daughters will live a happy life? Who takes the guarantee? Despite the splurging do our daughters get treated well! It is us who had made these stereotypes and we can only succumb them. When we can voice against the bribery system in government offices can't we refrain from appeasing the precarious needs of heinous dowry seekers? Else everyday a woman like Manjula Devak would self-immolate.Please share your views.
