Women can now use father’s name, children can use mother’s name on official documents in Maharashtra- Will this actually improve the condition of women in our country.
Women in Maharashtra will now have the option of using either the father's name or the husband's name in all the official documents, while the children will be able to use the mother's name. "Children can use either their mother's or father's name," a Government Resolution issued by the Women and Child Welfare Department today said. This is in accordance with the third women's policy, 2014, cleared by the state cabinet in March. My point here is in spite of such laws being passed, will the condition of women improve in our country? The mentality of so-called educated people would remain the same. Considering a daughter in law(DIL) an outsider and expecting her (only her) to adjust with the husband and the family. Their egos would never let the dil continue with her father’s name and for that matter their grandkids putting their mother’s surname at the end. The irony here is in in-laws and husband’s eyes the wife is an outsider , but when it comes to the surname to be continued of her father, it would definitely hurt their male ego . It is so sad and upsetting that in today’s time and age where women are working in all the fields equalent to their men counterparts(latest addition is the first 3 women fighter pilots),but at the home front they are still considered as a weaker gender and expected to abide by the opinions of their husbands. They are not considered as a good wife and a dil if they voice their views and opinions. Y and a big Y….are they not educated, does they donot have a mind of their own or by voicing their opinion are they dis-respecting the husband and in-laws…? In a nutshell, the crux Is unless and until the mindset of the people change(educated or not educated), such laws would not be of any benefit to women.
