Lohri is one of the favourite festival celebrated by Punjabi community.This festival is a sign to show that winter is moving back & spring is about to arrive. It is one of the biggest harvest festival.
Lohri festival is one of the most joyful occasions for every Punjabi , especially for those families where there has been a recent marriage or the birth of a son.
The key feature of Lohri is bonfire. The festival starts when all the family member forms a circle around the fire and starts revolving around it. People sing Traditional Punjabi songs during nighttime while dancing around the bonfire. One of the known song is " सुंदर मुंदिरये.. "
It calls for family get-together & lavish dinners with sarso ka saag & Makki ki roti. People also distribute popcorn, peanuts , sesame seeds ( til ) ke laddoo, gur ( jaggery ) , gajak, revri etc..
Lohri of North India coincides with Pongal in Tamil Nadu , Makar Sankranthi in Bengal , Tai Pongal in Kerala, all celebrated on the auspicious day of Makar Sankranthi..
