Starting solids for your baby? It sure will be a big milestone and definitely a bumpy ride!
I love to cook and thus, making my own baby food was fun and to be honest I never really considered buying baby food or compare the packaged food with the homemade one. It is evident that homemade food simply is healthier and tastier.
Here are some simple porridge recipes that worked well with me and my daughter:
Wheat Porridge: Mix 1 cup Wheat Dalia, 1 cup Moong Daal and half a cup Rice and make a powder. For ease I powdered the ingredients and stored them in an airtight container so it is convenient to make it instantly just when the baby is hungry. Add a teaspoon jaggery (helps to strengthen bones and helps fight cold), half cup water and two teaspoons of the powder. Cook for 7 minutes with constant stirring on low flame till you get a ribbon consistency. And it’s ready!
Ragi Porridge: Ragi is very healthy and filling for babies and Ragi powder is readily available in the market. Grind 10-12 Almonds and mix with Ragi powder. Store in a container for ready use. When needed, add 2 teaspoons of powder to 3/4th cup of water and 1 teaspoon jaggery and cook for 7-8 minutes with constant stirring to make a smooth paste.
Sooji Porridge: Roast Sooji in ghee. Add milk and jaggery and cook for 10-15 minutes on low flame. Pour into a bowl and feed your baby.
Raw Banana Porridge: This one needs a little pre-preparation. Take a very firm raw banana, cut ends off, slit and peel it off. Use a slicer to make thin slices and now keep in sun to dry for a few days. Once it is completely dry, blend and powder. Store in an airtight container. To make porridge, in 3/4th cup water add 2 teaspoons of powder, heat and cook. You may add jaggery to sweeten it. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Trust me it tastes yummy!
My lil one has been happily eating varieties of porridges since then and still enjoys them most of the time.
