Celebrate Children’s Day at these amazing weekend getaways!

 

1. DURSHET
Durshet is famous for its forest and nature trails. It's a perfect place for nature and adventure lovers as one can indulge in rock climbing, rappelling, trekking, camping and rifle shooting. The rivers nearby, Kundalike and Amba, are great places to fish in. Even the Old Pali Fort is an attraction for many. It's an ideal place to spend a weekend with your family.

How to reach there:

Durshet is 58kms from Mumbai. Public transport bus services are available from Mumbai. By train, Durshet is on the Konkan Railway line.

2. KELVA BEACH
Kelva Beach near Palghar is a beautiful location. It has a large stretch of clean coastline. The unique feature of the beach is the abundance of suru trees. Kelva Fort and Sitladevi temple are also located at the lakeside, which adds to the attraction of the beach. One can also go horse-riding here.

How to reach there:

Kelva Beach is about 140kms from Mumbai, 30kms off the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway via Manor and Palghar. You can reach Palghar by bus or take a train to Palghar railway station. Tourist taxis will take you to Kelva beach from there.

3. KASHID
Kashid is a beach town on the shores of the Arabian Sea nestled in the North Konkan region of Maharashtra. Kashid is popular mainly for its white sand, mountains, seas and paddy fields. It has a 3km stretch of beach tucked in between two rocky hillocks with casuarina groves (mangroves). It's a popular place for weekend getaways. Some of the other attractions around the place are Murud-Janjira, Kurlai Fort, Nawab Palace, Birla Temple and Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary.

How to reach there:

There are regular buses from Mumbai Central to Murud with halts at Kashid. There are direct trains on the Konkan Railway too. It is about 135kms from Mumbai and 30kms from Alibag.

4. RAJMACHI
Rajmachi is a picturesque region consisting of two mountain peaks, namely Manaranjan and Shrivardhan. Rajmachi is famous for the fort and the twin hillstations- Khandala and Lonavla. Shrivardhan is the highest peak with a height of about 3,000ft and Manaranjan has a height of 2,700ft.

Rajmachi has a long history related to rulers and invaders across the country. The Rajmachi Fort can be considered as two forts, one on each peak. The fort is constructed to have an overview of the Konkan region and is a symbol of the political turmoil Rajmachi witnessed.

Rajmachi is renowned for trekking. One can trek from the Tungarli Lake region to Rajmachi through breath-taking natural routes. The ancient caves known as Kondhavi enclosed by the Rajmachi Fort offer a nice view of the ancient architecture.

How to reach there:

Thakurwadi village near Lonavla is where the trek to Rajmachi begins. Regular bus services are available from Mumbai and Pune to Lonavla. By train, Lonavla is the nearest station. One can hire a taxi or shared auto to reach there.

You can stay at:

Since it's a day trip, there are few places available for overnight stays. However, many houses in the villages offer overnight accommodations.

 

5. KARNALA
Karnala is popular amongst naturalists and weekend planners. The small climb to the Karnala Fort from the bird sanctuary is extremely enjoyable. One can see plenty of waterfalls and rich vegetation that make the climb extremely pleasant right through the year. The point on the top provides a panoramic view of the Sahyadri Mountains. One can also spot Haji Malang and Matheran.

How to reach there:

You can go to Panvel and take the Goa highway. It's 12kms away from Panvel. Or one can take the Harbour Line and take a rickshaw to Karnala.

6. KOLAD
Kolad is famous for its waterfalls, rugged topography and rocky mountains. The greatest attraction here is the Kundalika River, which is one among the fastest flowing rivers in South India. Water released from the nearby dams ensures that this river is always fl owing. The Kundalika riverbed in Kolad is an ideal place for adventurous activities. It is a spectacular location to experience the pleasure of white-water rafting. The 14km-long stretch across the Kundalika river provides exciting rapids for rafting.

Apart from this, the river also offers facilities for kayaking, paragliding and river crossing. Boating through the river is an awesome experience. This scenic locale with the fascinating and amazing spectacle of nature is a recommended picnic spot for those who prefer to enjoy the lovely warmth of nature.

How to reach there:

Kolad is well-connected through state-owned public transport buses. Many private buses also provide transport services between Kolad and Mumbai. Kolad railway station is on the Konkan Railway line, which is connected to Mumbai CST.

7. MALSHEJ GHAT
Malshej Ghat is a great place where you can experience nature. Beautiful waterfalls, vast stretches of greenery and interesting rock formations best describe this hill station. You can go trekking in the nearby hills. A visit to Shivneri Fort, the birthplace of Shivaji, is a must. It is 40kms away from Malshej Ghat.

How to reach there:

Malshej Ghat is 150kms from Mumbai. You can drive to Malshej Ghat from Mumbai via Thane, Kalyan, Saralgaon and Vaishakhare. If you opt to travel by train, the nearest station is Kalyan, from where you can catch a bus to Malshej Ghat. The train journey will take you one and a half hours.

8. BHATYE
Bhatye is on the outskirts of Ratnagiri town. You can camp across the bridge in MTDC's tent resort, amidst whispering casuarinas. The water-sports facilities at Bhatye are exciting. You can also explore the Swaroopanand Swami Ashram close by.

How to reach there:

Ratnagiri is the closest railway stop and is on the Konkan Railway line. State transport buses are also available from Mumbai to Ratnagiri. By road, it is 356kms from Mumbai to Ratnagiri.
