'लकड़ी की काठी'- Musical hand washing

Some years ago I would have easily qualified as a fussy mom. Those days I wanted to ensure my children do all the activities, play outdoors, cycle, paint and read from old dusty books we have in our collection. Then I also forced them to clean their hands. Because I knew hand washing is one of the most important ways to prevent the spread of germs during childcare.

When washing hands, it is important to scrub for a full 20 seconds. Many children forget to wash their hands for this long. The preschoolers need it the most. Lectures do not work. Best strategy with them to make a boring activity fun. So that the fun time doesn’t end at the door it extends in the home.

I read an article where a school had devised hand-washing songs. One of the things the children enjoy is to sing. Teaching children to sing a "hand washing song" while they wash is a great way to help them measure if they have been scrubbing long enough. I made my first song based on ‘Lakdi ki kaathi’ - a very popular children's song. Then it became a trend and we made many. I became a liberated mom.

I made one more change; I bought the Dettol hand wash with dispenser to give them that fun feel of squirting while singing their songs. I was peaceful that Dettol would take care of the germs. The soap bar slipping or remaining smeared with the grime was no longer a tension. I didn’t have to scream and shout. My daughters returned from the park and I could hear the tap in the bathroom with their singing. My experiment had worked. Both the hand wash and the songs were a hit!

Here are a few hand washing songs. Choose a song that you enjoy, teach it to the children, and practice singing it while they wash their hands.

1. Do boond Dettol (Sing to the tune of Lakdi ki kaathi)

2. Good and Clean (Sing to the tune of ‘Happy Birthday To You)

Wash my hands so good and clean,

Wash my fingers and in between,

Watch the germs all go away,

Now they're clean, I'll go and play

(Repeat)

3. We washy-washy clean, scrub-scrub (Sing to the tune of ‘If you’re happy and you know it’)

We washy-washy clean, scrub-scrub

We washy-washy clean, scrub-scrub

It's fun to wash your hands and I know you'll understand

We washy-washy clean, scrub-scrub

We start with washing palm to palm

Between each finger let us rub

Now the back of the hands, it’s such a simple plan

We washy-washy clean, scrub-scrub

Clean the base of the thumbs one by one

Then the back of the fingers this is fun!

Don't forget your fingernails, it’s all about details

We washy-washy clean, scrub-scrub

Now move on to the wrists, let us rub

I think were nearly done, so now what?

Just rinse the soap away, dry our hands we’re ok

We washy-washy clean, scrub-scrub

So we washy-washy clean, scrub-scrub

We washy-washy clean, scrub-scrub

It's fun to wash your hands and I know you'll understand

We washy-washy clean, scrub-scrub

Years later, the hand wash habit has got deep ingrained in my daughters and now we have dedicated bathroom singers singing my ‘Do boond Dettol’ song. This time there was a hygiene campaign in the youngest daughter's school and she returned home all excited. "Mummy like us, the Dettol people have made a new song for hand washing.”

She played the YouTube video of the ‘Dettol Dettol Ho’ song. It was quite interesting. And it further instills the importance of washing hands in the correct and healthy way! You can use the ‘Dettol Ho’ song to ensure your child washes his or her hands thoroughly.

Writing Your Own Hand Washing Song

Try writing your own hand washing song. Choose a well-known children's song, and write new words that teach children how to wash their hands.

Preschoolers and school-age children may enjoy making up their own hand washing songs. Write down the words they come up with, and encourage them to decorate the poster. Laminate the words in big bold letters on posters and hang them near the hand-washing sink as a reminder. Children will enjoy singing the songs they make up and may even wash their hands longer as a result
