COMPASSIONATE HEART IS A HEALTHY HEART!

"In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years" ~ Abraham Lincoln.

The famous quote mentioned above aptly captures the essence of life. How true it is! And our heart is one organ which is almost synonymous with life. It epitomizes life and morality. Heart is like the physical manifestation of life itself, being the most important part of our body. Its health is therefore vital and central to the well-being of our entire self.

But the sad truth of our fast paced times is that heart disease continues to be the number one killer. Two out of four women are at risk of heart problems. 81% of doctors surveyed feel that women are less proactive about getting diagnosis and treatment done compared to men.Thankfully, the good news is that it is completely preventable by making lifestyle changes. In the long run, these small lifestyle changes can greatly alter the entire trajectory of our health and life.

First and foremost, I think we have to focus on holistic health and balanced existence. Working women, juggling between home and work, are more likely to be exposed to stress & unhealthy lifestyle. The constant rat-race in which we are pitched against each other in competition becomes detrimental and destructive for our total well-being leading to stress and anxiety, which are the biggest enemies of our heart-health. We have to consciously try to have an 'attitude of gratitude' ,focusing more on the positives in our life. Try not to fret on the negative aspects constantly thereby making them loom so large as to obscure other brighter possibilities. Learning to be more compassionate in our daily lives can be great help. These factors will take good care of the emotional aspect of our heart.

Next, the role of exercise and diet can't be emphasized enough for better cardiovascular health and disease prevention. As increase in body weight, decreased physical activity and unhealthy food habits are the main reasons for increase in heart diseases. Walking is a good form of cardio-workout. It's simple, easy and can be incorporated smoothly in our daily schedule. Regular walking benefits the heart, body and mind by helping to lose body fat and improve fitness levels. It keeps osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure at bay.As it is a weight bearing exercise,it improves bone density, imparting core-strengthening and also improves balance.Walking in nature provides added perks like nice views, fresh air and soothing sounds which provide us peace & calm, thereby boosting our mood.

"Exercise all you want but a bad diet will doom you" say the experts. The medical research published recently in British Journal of Sports Medicine suggests that diet matters much more than physical activity. Therefore, the most effective way to ensure good heart health is through a healthy diet comprising of fruits & vegetables, which are rich in fibers and low in fat. Reduce junk food consumption as repeated re-heating of oil (as is integral to junk food making) changes the chemical structure of the oil, causing oxidation, an increase in free radicals and depletion of anti-oxidants. One should consume more nuts and seeds for better cardiovascular health.

As mother and care-givers, women tend to be the 'health watchdogs' of the family. The valuable contribution women make in the functioning of family and society is unquantifiable. We are the primary health-care givers and only by being healthy ourselves can we take effective care of our loved ones.A healthy mother starts a cycle of inter-generational health. It won't be an overstatement to say that a healthy world starts with a healthy woman.

Despite this knowledge, women often choose to ignore the symptoms of heart disease. At such times, spouse can play an active role in encouraging women to take good self-care.
"Marriage: If you want something to last forever, you treat it differently. You shield it and protect it. It becomes special because you have made it so, and it grows more beautiful and precious as time goes by. " ~ F. Burton Howard.

Let's decide to take care of our heart-health and thereby do both our family and ourselves a favor. This can be ensured by following an efficient family health plan, involving exercise and healthy diet.

Take the first step by getting a weight and a heart test done at saffolalife.com
Following a daily walking regimen of even 30 minutes with your partner can be extremely beneficial, which is also a nice way to spend quality time together. This time can be utilized by engaging in stimulating conversations without the other interruptions like idiot-box etc. Most often, such conversations lead to healthy solutions to certain problematic issues of life.

Also, enjoying a well-balanced healthy meal together should be on top of our priority list, as this is necessary to keep our heart happy and healthy.
Keeping all this in mind"I'm joining the Saffolalife #ProtectHerHeart initiative and pledging my support to better heart-health in association with Blogadda.
