As women's day is coming closer, there are several ariticles popping up on how feminism is actually disguised sexism. While it is unfortunately true in certain aspects , I feel it is too early to write off feminism, especially in a country like ours.
Now what is feminism? In simple words its a belief or an ideology that claims that all men and women need to have equal rights and opportunities.
So have we reached this milestone? What's making us give up on this ideology now? It's simple...it's because we are a gender who is not true to ourselves. While it's easy for the urban working woman to give a dismissive wave to feminism, there are still several woman who suffer just because they were not born without an extra appendage.
We can scream our lungs out saying we are strong, we are powerful, we dont need men to support us. But the fact is as long as you hand over your phone to a male member of your family whenever you get a crank call , or you need to request your husband to help you in the household chores or for that matter you thank your husband profusely for babysitting his own child for an hour, we have definitely not achieved anything.
Feminism is not to prove a point to anyone. But it is a belief that has to be understood by every individual until it becomes a way of life.
There are also many women who keep proving that feminism is actually disguised sexism. Sexual harassment of men is something that happens but is hardly reported. When you think of the ratios of men harassed and women harassed , it is definitely not comparable, but that does not make such an act justifiable.
Women who take undue advantage of their gender need to pause and think about the repercussions of their actions. With each fake case of sexual harassment, dowry demand, domestic violence we are making a joke of this belief called feminism.
In every family when a demand for dowry is made, a woman is involved. When a female foetus is killed a woman is involved. Feminism is to show women like this that it's time to stop this shit. It's time to take your gender to another level.
The following quote is a perfect description of feminism.
"I know enough women who are totally patriarchal, who are totally anti women, and I have known men who have worked for women's rights their whole life . Feminism is not biological, it's an ideology."- Kamla Bhasin
We need to work towards bettering ourselves as a gender instead of writing off a term that is associated with our gender, just because we can't handle the responsibility that comes along with it.
