Jagga Jasoos, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles with supporting performances by powerful actors like Saswata Chatterjee, Sayani Gupta and Saurabh Shukla, opened in theatres this weekend and I have to say, my excitement levels were at a peak.
Why, you ask? Well, for starters, the song “Ullu Ka Patha” has been playing on a loop ever since its release, in my car, on my laptop, on my phone, etc. (You get the picture!). I love the way it’s been picturised, the lyrics, the music, the choreography and Ranbir and Katrina’s expressions in it. For me, that was the main motivation to go watch the movie, I wanted to see how a song as cute as this found a place in the narration.
Also because it’s a Disney production, and I wanted to figure out if the Disney magic had influenced this quirky film as well, which had been in the making for the past 5 years and was touted as a musical before its imminent release.
So we (i.e. my kids and I) watched the movie on a rainy Monday evening in Hyderabad, and suffice to say, we had a whale of a time! Edgy, fun and with enough visual treats to keep even my 4-year-olds entertained throughout, here are my top 5 reasons as to why you MUST watch Jagga Jasoos with your kids:-
1) The Story – makes the detective in us come alive!
For years and years, mystery stories have always intrigued kids (and adults!) so this is one big scoring factor for the film. A fun mix of the Enid Blyton detective series like Famous Five, Secret Seven, Find Outers, etc. and apna desi Byomkesh and Karamchand, this whodunit will keep you hooked throughout.
2) The Colours in the film
The cinematographer and the cameraperson deserve special mention for making Jagga Jasoos a visual delight, with the way the whole canvas of the film has been presented. Picturesque locales, top-notch animation, beautiful hill stations – the film is a treat to the eyes!
3) The Songs – will make you dance!
Because Jagga Jasoos was planned and executed as a musical, it goes without saying that the music is top-notch. Ulla Ka Patha and Galti Se Mistake had already taken over children’s fantasies with their fun choreography and dishy visuals, but even Jhumri Talaiya, Khaana Khaake and even the soulful Phir Wahi will leave you entranced. A fabulous effort by Pritam and Amitabh Bhattacharya!
4) Ranbir’s Heart Wrenching Performance
The team of Anurag Basu and Ranbir Kapoor gave us the powerful Barfi, one of Ranbir’s best performances till date. With Jagga Jasoos, magic of a different kind is created and Ranbir looks like he really enjoyed playing the character of Jagga, who’s on a double mission of sorts. He adds his own unique touch and eccentricities to the character and manages to convey so many expressions with just his eyes! His physical transformation – from his gait to his stutter and even his hair made him just the perfect guy to play the role of the bumbling detective.
5) Katrina’s Nerdy Avatar
Katrina, though not know much for her acting chops, aces her ‘look’ in each film that she does, and this one is no different. As a journalist who is following the trade of illegal weapons in India and whose life gets entangled with the Mafia from where she is saved by Ranbir a.k.a. Jagga, she gets it right with her glasses, basic outfits and casual shoes, with the right expressions to match as well. Her character has been written very well, which sort of makes up for her lack of acting talent.
And of course, the one who’s holding the film together, director par excellence, Anurag Basu and his work of art that is Jagga Jasoos, a film which the entire family can watch together and enjoy to the hilt!
